Next Monday we will have an entertaining program with the Tulsa World cartoonist Bruce Plante.
Bruce Plante knew, while growing up in Texarkana, Ark., that drawing and humor were in his future. He began drawing cartoons in the second grade and began performing standup comedy in the sixth grade.
As a sophomore at the University of Arkansas, Bruce became the editorial cartoonist for the Arkansas Traveler, the school newspaper. He also drew a comic strip called Sheepskins. He won the Sigma Delta Chi Mark of Excellence award in editorial cartooning and the Southwestern Journalism Congress Award of Excellence.
Bruce worked as a staff artist / editorial cartoonist at the Arkansas Democrat (1978 -1981), for The Fayetteville (N.C.) Times (1981-84) and the Potomac (VA) News (1985).
In 1985, Bruce became the first staff editorial cartoonist for The Chattanooga Times. He joined the Tulsa World in October 2007.
Last week we learned about the upcoming Tulsa School Bond Issue coming up on Tues. March 2nd. I think we all agree how important this is for Tulsa. Don’t forget to get out and vote.
Congratulations to Tom Gilbert on winning several awards at the awards banquet of the Society of Professional Journalists. Tom is doing a great job as our program chairman as well as sharing the pictures he takes at all our meetings. Take the time to thank Tom the next time you see him for a job well done.
Thanks to all the officers and directors who attended our recent board meeting. We have some exciting things coming up for the club you will be learning more about, so stay tuned.
Ron Skelton has been building a new web site for the club and we appreciate his help. Check it out at www.willrogersrotar y.org. Let us know if you have suggestions or comments.
I hope to see all of you Monday.
Larry
